About the Mango & Passionfruit Overnight Oats (Vegan)
Starbucks Mango and Passionfruit Overnight Oats cost £4.70 and carry 254 calories with 3.4g of fibre. Coconut milk yogurt alternative, mango and passionfruit compote, rolled oats, shredded apple and coconut flakes, served cold.
The saturated fat figure is the one that surprises people. 6.6g of the 9.1g total is saturated, which is more than the Smoked Bacon Roll carries at 4.5g. Coconut is the reason: coconut oil is over 80 percent saturated fat, higher than butter and far higher than pork. A vegan label describes what the food is made from, not how much saturated fat it contains, and these two figures are the clearest illustration of that on the whole menu.
Set that aside and the rest reads well. 3.4g of fibre is close to double what the Greek style yogurt manages at 1.7g, sugar is 13g against that pot's 19g, and salt is negligible at 0.05g. Protein is the weak point at 5.3g, roughly half the yogurt pot, which is what happens when dairy comes out.
Texture is the reason to buy this over the hot porridge rather than the nutrition. Oats soaked overnight go soft without going gluey, the shredded apple keeps some bite, and the coconut flakes on top stay crisp. It is a cold breakfast that does not feel like a compromise, which is not true of most of them.
Cold oats and hot oats are genuinely different foods rather than the same food at two temperatures. Heat makes oat starch swell and burst, which is what gives porridge its thickness; a cold soak softens the grain without bursting it, so the oats stay separate and keep some chew. Anyone who dislikes porridge for its texture often gets on with this.
It carries vegan and vegetarian labels and an oat allergen warning. Prices reach £5.40 on delivery. The Classic Porridge is the hot alternative at £4.25.

How to Make a Mango & Passionfruit Overnight Oats (Vegan) at Home
Made the night before in the jar you eat it from. The ratio of oats to liquid is the only thing that matters.

Method
0 of 4 stepsTips
- Keep the compote separate until you eat it. Mixed in overnight it bleeds and everything goes one colour.
- Toast the coconut flakes in a dry pan for two minutes. Untoasted they are chewy and taste of very little.
- Grate the apple coarsely rather than finely. Fine grating turns to mush by morning.
Variations
- Soya yogurt instead of coconut, which cuts the saturated fat sharply and raises the protein.
- Frozen mango, which is riper than most fresh mango sold in the UK and cheaper.
- A spoon of chia seeds for more fibre and a thicker set.
Straight from the jar, cold. It keeps three days, though the coconut on top should go on the morning you eat it.
