The Starbucks bottled drinks menu is 13 items priced from £2.55 to £3.45, covering water, juices, lemonades, an iced tea and three wellness shots. It is the cheapest category on the whole menu, and ONE Water 500ml at £2.55 is the least expensive thing in the fridge.

Calories run from nothing in the three waters to 112 in an Apple and Mango Juice, which is also the sweetest at 28g of sugar. The Still Lemonade is the outlier of the range at 8 calories and 0.7g of sugar, the lowest of any flavoured drink Starbucks sells.

Sugar is the figure that separates this shelf, and it is not distributed the way the labels suggest. The VITWATER carries 17g despite reading as water with vitamins in it, more than a Grande Caffè Latte, while the three ONE Water bottles carry none at all.

The three shots at the end of the range are the most expensive per millilitre of anything Starbucks sells, which is the standard economics of a wellness shot rather than anything unusual here. The Acerola and Raspberry Shot carries 120mg of vitamin C, ten times what the ginger and turmeric versions provide.

Choosing From the Starbucks Fridge

Water is worth doing the arithmetic on. The 750ml bottle holds 50 percent more than the 500ml for around 40p more, which makes it the cheapest water per litre on the menu by a clear margin. Still and sparkling 500ml bottles are priced identically, which is not true in most supermarkets, so the choice there costs nothing either way.

Worth saying plainly: every UK store will give you tap water free if you ask, and will fill a bottle you have brought in. The bottled product buys a sealed cap and something you can put in a bag, not better water. That is a fair trade at a station and a poor one at a table.

For a low sugar flavoured option there is one real answer on this shelf. The Still Lemonade at 0.7g is the only flavoured drink under a gram; the sweetness comes from sweeteners rather than sugar, which suits anyone cutting sugar and does not suit anyone avoiding sweeteners specifically. The raspberry version of the same lemonade carries 14g.

Juice and juice drink are different things and the label distinguishes them legally rather than decoratively. The Smooth Orange Juice is 100 percent pure squeezed; the Berries Juice Drink is juice plus other ingredients, usually water. Neither is better, but only one of them is fruit alone.

Dietary labels are inconsistent across this shelf and worth checking individually. The three waters, the VITWATER and the acerola shot all carry vegan and gluten free labels; the peach iced tea, the berries juice drink and the ginger and turmeric shots carry no dietary labels at all, which is not the same as being unsuitable but does mean the bottle is the place to look.
